As one of Scotland’s premier deer forests Invermark offers wonderful red
deer stalking over 50,000 acres.
Invermark was established as a deer forest in 1853 with the introduction of
a small number of red deer from Black Mount in Argyll. Invermark was also in
1870 the source of the first introduction of red deer to New Zealand, now the
largest deer farming nation in the world.
The stalking at Invermark is carried out in the traditional manner using ponies
on most beats during the stag season to recover the deer. Each stalking guest
is accompanied by one of the estate stalkers assisted by a walking ghillie
and a pony man.
The established population of around 2,000 deer now supports an annual stalking
programme of over 100 stags in addition to a hind cull of around 400. Stags
of up to 18 stone have been shot in recent years, and although it is not the
management practice to shoot the best stags, consistent management has resulted
in a high proportion of good heads up to Royal standard.
In general
the stalking is let by the week to groups of up to 8
couples who enjoy five star cuisine in Invermark Lodge.
